Shelter Insurance Companies began in 1946 in Missouri, where the company still operates its headquarters. Shelter Insurance was founded by seven farmers who, in 1946, formed one of Missouri’s first Farm Clubs. The initial goal of the organization was to pool farm resources in order to obtain discounts when buying goods and supplies. In 1949, the original group of seven farmers joined with other local groups to form the Missouri Farmers Association.
Shelter Insurance Company was an outgrowth of the original MFA. The initial focus of the company was to provide farmers with affordable and reliable access to insurance coverage. By the early 1950s, the company had grown to be the largest mutual casualty insurance company in Missouri.
In 1981, Shelter Insurance reorganized. Shelter Insurance divorced itself from the Missouri Farmers Association and re-branded itself as a national, comprehensive insurance company. Since that time, Shelter has grown significantly. Shelter Insurance now offers a wide selection of personal and business insurance products including: auto, renters, home, life, boat, farm, business, and risk management policies.
In 2002, Shelter car insurance covered over one million drivers. Shelter Insurance currently offers car insurance polices in thirteen states across the mid-south and mid-west regions. Shelter car insurance policies offer a variety of coverage and pricing options that allow drivers to customize a policy to meet their specific needs and budgets.

Shelter insurance currently employees approximately 1,800 employees and supports an additional 1,400 licensed agents and services approximately 1.97 million policies.
