Infographic: America’s need for speed

Like so many celebrities – Justin Bieber and Lindsay Lohan are a couple of high-profile examples – actress and professional poker player Jennifer Tilly has been nabbed a few times for putting the pedal to the metal.
“I had a problem with cops pulling me over all the time for speeding,” Tilly once confessed. “When I was doing ‘Hill Street Blues,’ the cops said how much they loved the show as they were writing me up; meanwhile, my insurance went through the roof.”
Tilly is certainly not alone in getting pulled over for speeding and in seeing her car insurance rates go up after getting slapped with a speeding ticket. In 2008, about half of all traffic stops in the U.S. resulted in a traffic ticket, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. As Tilly likely discovered, a first-time speeding ticket can cause a roughly 20 percent to 25 percent hike in your car insurance premium, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Here, CarInsuranceQuotes.com presents an array of statistics about Tilly’s – and America’s – need for speed.
