NHTSA approves V2V
Sorry for all of the abbreviations in the title, but no worries- I am here to explain them to you! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just announced plans to do research to mandate vehicle to vehicle communication (V2V).
What is V2V? It’s basically car telepathy that may or may not apply to a self-driving car. When an automobile is accelerating or merging it will send out the message in a ginormous auto network so that all those around it will know and adjust their actions accordingly.
This is a big deal, because it means that soon you may not have to worry about drunk or distracted drivers getting all up in your lane. You can just chill.
While it sounds pretty awesome, I’m also a bit sad. Driving will become predictable and no one will really know if anyone else is a “good” or “bad” driver- we’ll all just be V2V passengers.
