Information Contained On A Declarations Page
Within car insurance, the Declarations page (or Dec page) is the first, and perhaps most important, page of your car insurance coverage summary. In it, you will find all the applicable information on your policy – information that can be easily overlooked or misunderstood when skimming through the assorted paperwork that comes with new car insurance. The Declaration page is essentially your coverage summary and includes, among many other things, information regarding the insurer and the insured (you), and can be used as a simple reference to the particulars of your car insurance policy.
Most of what you will find in the pages of your car insurance coverage summary is generalities and blanket information that applies to all of the insurance company's policyholders within your state. However, the Declaration page is usually the one piece of paper that applies to your policy directly. As stated above, the contact information for your insurance company can be found here, in case you need to contact them, along with the readily available policy number that applies to your car insurance coverage. In addition to the policy number, you will find the year, make and model number of the insured vehicle(s), as well as the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN). This information regarding your vehicle(s) should always be kept up-to-date with the insurance company. Your Declaration page will also list the names of the insured drivers and the policy start and end dates, as well as other detailed car insurance information.
Some of the policy-specific details listed on the Declarations page include deductibles and premiums, as well as coverage types and limits. If you decided to add any additional coverage, such as personal injury protection or property damage, for instance, these will also be listed on your Declaration page, along with the cost of each coverage purchased. If the vehicle is financed, the lender who holds the loan and has a lien on the car will be listed as "loss payee." In the event the car is totaled, they will be reimbursed first.
It is important that you read through all of this very carefully. You will want to make 100 percent sure that the information listed on the Declaration page is correct. It is of the utmost importance that the coverage you believe you purchased is reflected here, as well as the information pertaining to the insured drivers and vehicles listed in the policy. In addition, you will want to review your Declarations page every time your policy is renewed to ensure the information is still correct and that you will not be lacking car insurance coverage that may have been inadvertently dropped upon renewal.
